Surprise! Suhana's Back!
|
|
Fotopages was down for soo long this week! Got all withdrawaly with so many pics and nowhere to upload them to! So I messed around with blogspot and put some photos from this entry into:
www.snippetsoflife.blogspot.com
I've put all the photos here now so that will be a spare page when Fotopages is down.
Got a shock of my life when Fadhil called me on Sunday nite during Oprah Prime Time. He said he had something to pass me rather urgently. So I went down to meet him, Suhana was standing at my doorstep! I stood there and went for the longest time! That was a really well executed surprise, I had no idea! It was really nice to see her and she's going back next Sunday so we met for dinner on Monday at East Coast!
It'll be quite activity filled this week, have Thievery Corporation on Wednesday, Iqa's hens night on Friday and Venessa's birthday on Saturday so will Plog (photolog) soon! Let's hope Fotopages is up the whole of this week! Its good to be back!

Bye Nita! We Love You!
|
|
A long over due entry! This site didn't function for the longest time and it took me ages to get pics uploaded.
Not much to update this week except that work has been going absolutely shitty the past 3 days in a row. Never felt more of an urge to just run home and get under the covers and stay there. Had to come face to face and tell my publisher that I screwed over his biggest client. Needless to say he wasn't exactly ecstatic. Times like these I feel like throwing in the towel and quitting. But I persevere. The same way constipation builds character... yeah something like that.
Photos are a bit lax - major event this week was cousin Nita leaving to the UK to do her masters. We had dinner and a double bill movie on Friday with her and we named our pasta at Sketches: "Bye Nita, we love you so much, come back soon!" hoping the waiter will come to the table and say the whole thing but he didn't. Whose having the pasta? Easy way out. Will really miss her the one year that she's going to be gone. Had to see 3 really close people off this year (so far!) and it never gets any easier.
Nick, our aspiring magician cousin entertained us with his card tricks. He's actually really impressive. My favourite one of the night was when he makes you take a card. clasp it in the palm of your hand so he has no way of taking it out. Then taking another random card and tapping it so it "magically" becomes the card in your hand. And the random card he took is now the one you're clasping. Aweeesome I say (in a thick British accent).
Helmy had a birthday party at his house on Sunday, could have taken TONS of pics there but I left my camera battery in the office and camera was completely flat so didn't get to take one stinky pic also. Wish my camera had a function to use batteries when theres no electric outlet in times like these.
Oook lah, shouldn't be another 2 weeks before theres another entry so our dear devoted fans, weep not.

Happy Birthday Mum!!!
|
|
Its mum's birthday today! She saw a picture of a Louis Vuitton bag shaped cake and went quite balmy so we decided to create something similar for her. I started research by going on yellow pages and getting a whole load of numbers for bakeries in Singapore. It was a lil difficult calling each bakery one by one and asking if they did custom made cakes. One bakery I called said yeah yeah we can do custard made cakes! And one when I tried to explain in mandarin what 3D was, ended up explaining it to mean a triangle!
Finally it was down to 2 people, the guys at Bakerstreet which makes fantastic 3D designs and this place Swiss Baeckerei which we eventually went to. Was so impressed when we went to check out their bakery. Beatrice, the pastry chef, said we could choose any base we wanted, from tiramisu to chocolate to vanilla to butter to sugee to mousse to raspberry and that she could do the bag decoration for another 40 bucks. By that I thought she meant she would have the cake shaped into a bag but she provided us with a base and the decoration separately for us to stick on top. Still worked rather well for us, cake was pretty and mum liked the tiramisu cos it wasn't so sweet. They even gave us 3 eclairs to bring home on the house and Sherin, Nicole and I agree that those were the best eclairs we've ever eaten!
Her present was an OSIM warm air massager which combines "soothing heat therapy and percussion massage". Ooooo.....
A few of us watched Harold and Kumar go to Whitecastle on Saturday. Reviews said it was hilarious and we weren't disappointed, think we all had a good dose of laughs. Next show to catch is The Terminal. Probably told everyone I know this fact already but if you haven't heard, The Terminal is based loosely on a true story about a guy who really got stuck in the airport. Only thing is that the real guy got stuck for SIXTEEN YEARS. 16!!!!! Think he's still there, apparantly when someone said he could get him out, he refused and chose to stay there cos he was so comfortable with the cocoon he built for himself. WOW. Read the story here.
Found a deal on Zuji - flight to Thailand, accomodation for one night and breakfast - 49 buckeroos! No additional surcharges.... additional nights are $30 nett...we placed a booking for it. Conditions are that you have to travel before the 29th of this month so lets hope we can get it to be confirmed!
*Fingers crossed*

WOMAD 2004!
|
|
WOMAD had a pretty good line up this year. I went for Talvin Singh's clubset and to see Temple of Sound. Talvinder brought the house down with his clubset on Saturday, he's quite the man. He closed WOMAD on sunday with a chilled, downtempo set, so it was rather disappointing. Think we were all hoping he would end on a high note. Temple of Sound was another downer. I only enjoyed the first 20 mins then after that Sherin said they started to sound like Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine.
I do love the atmosphere of WOMAD. I'll be shocked if a major fight does break out. Its supposed to be this whole brother sister peace loving thing going and the food stalls don't rank too lowly either! I was so taken in by this family that was sitting next to us on Saturday. Parents came with 2 lovely kids, tanned and absolutely glowing in the pink of health. Then you know why, their mother whips out food like fresh oranges, granola bars and raw carrot sticks. When I saw their father reach into the cooler, I was thinking that was it.... Ice cream bars, Cokes, there's gotta be something! Nooo! He took out fresh green veggies and fat tomatoes and cut them on a chopping board!!! And then he scooped guacamole on lil wedges of bread. The kids were relishing it, amazing!! And so many cute kids around! Some cutey pie girls in long white dresses dancing on their fathers shoulders and with their mothers carrying them! You just wanna take a couple of them home in your pocket to bring home and play with!
Weather thank goodness was awesome, no rain, no wet ground. That would have been a major bummer. Organisers say WOMAD for the past 7 years has been blessed with good weather. They bluff. Faiz got caught soaking wet last year in the Nitin Sawhney set. But hey, I was dry so I was happy. No wet feet. I love the rain as long as I'm not wearing open toed shoes. Something abt wet feet that really bugs me...
And we're off to KL and Port Dickson this weekend! More pics then!

Bye Ajay! We Love You!
|
|
Entries seem to be once weekly now recapping weekends... last week was no different! Friday went to Newsroom with the whole family - our mums and brothers all... Pretty crappy show. The emcee turned out to be funnier that Irene Ang, Patricia Mok and Koh Chieng Mun put together. Emcee when doing the lucky draw called somone by the name of Agus, AGHAST. Then when he meant to say big round of applause, he said put your big hands together. Somehow he cracked us up a lot more cos try as we did, we couldn't find jabs at terrorism and slapstick humour very amusing. Thats just us but everyone else seemed to have a pretty hearty time! Kumar as usual saved the day, and local hottie Brendon Fernandez showed up... The place was PACKED, Guiness definitely made their bucks... 2 out of the 12 of us were the only ones who drank the vile liquid. Rest of us were happy on Evian and cokes. Sherin was asking, whatever happened to George Lam and his: "You should never fear the knock on your door at midnight... Me? I'm never home at midnight" adverts?
We threw a little farewell gathering for Ajay on Saturday. He's leaving for four years to Melbourne to study . We tried making his fav foods. Sherin went to great lengths to make the best Mee Soto and Ikan Bilis Sambal. We knew that was his fav food when a long time ago, everyone was sitting down after a party session and having supper. Someone asked what was everyones fav food. And it went round the table, Sherin said Cheese & Potatoes, I said Portugese Egg Tarts, Ajay said Ikan Bilis Sambal, someone said Hor Fun. When it came to Abi, Shane's rather rich friend, thought for the longest time and went: I think.... I'll have to say...... (in his american accent) LOBSTERS! Say lah thosai or chicken rice or what.... Lobster balls....
Back to the party - we made cookies from scratch, fried rice, drumlets and dips. Good thing was we planned it to a tee so there ware no leftovers and minimal washing ensued! One of our better planned parties yet! We took the easy way out for dessert and just passed a tub of ice cream around and armed everyone with plastic spoons. About 10 ppl showed up, it was rather nice and intimate. (cos thats about all the people my house can take seated comfortably)
I was looking for my Seinfeld stand up CD for Mario when I came across my Asian Travels one... bought that after TransGlobal Underground performed at WOMAD. So will listen to it and get hyped up for this Saturday and Sunday.....
Everything aside, I downloaded a new font and got terribly excited. Hooboy, Nerd alert!

Doug Robb, will you marry us?
|
|
Yahoo auctions are a godsend. We got tickets to Hoobastank for twenty dollars!!! Concert was pretty good, crowd was well behaved, energy was very high and Doug Robb on stage....
2 things that were a tad bummer were that they didn't come back for an encore and that the $59 tickets, which was us, was a good 100m away from the $79 area. A hugeee space was just in the midst and that made no sense at all. Doug (we are on a first name basis here) kept asking everyone to "Find a way! Jump over, the fence is not that high. Eventually security opened the barricades for their last song. Thanks eh.... Sherin and I already left by then but we went back in time for the ending. After watching Doug Robb doing his thing, we got inspired to compile a list of our fav gorgeous men! We'll upload the list here mid week, no prizes who's gonna be featured...
Had pina coladas at sunset bay for awhile, got tired and went over to Jalan Kayu for supper. Disappointing food that day, curry tasted like they swirled a dead goat in hot water and stirred in some curry powder before serving it in a bowl.
Watched the fireworks at the Padang on Saturday, left my camera case there! Could be worse, I could have left the camera in there as well! Came back and watched Michael Jacksons Number Ones. I think he's one heck of an entertainer! His lean in Smooth Criminal.... Had to study after that cos I have 2 months before my Sociology deadline is up and if I dun finish it, I can kiss WOMAD and KL goodbye.

No kidding, 3 parties in 3 days!
Friday was Ajay's 24th, Saturday was Shane's 21st and Sunday was a lil boy from Melissa's school called Ethan and I think he turned 3 or 4. So! Breakdown breakdown breakdown!
Friday: Sherin and I took the day off to prepare for Shane's party so we started our day at abt 1130. We drove from Telok Blangah for meat to Desker Road for drinks and back to Melissa's place to put all the stuff down cos her place acted as collection point. After that we went down to East Coast to pay for our BBQ permit (all the pits were fully booked so we had to bring our own) and locate our spot for where we wanted to set the party up. After that we went back for a quick while, changed and went to Takshimaya to buy some inflatables at the Toy Square. There, Sherin managed to convince Ajay to come down cos she was really depressed and needed someone to talk to. There it was a lil SURPLIES with a small cake together with Faiz and Trevor. We excused ourselves from the fellas to do a lil shopping at Cold Storage for BBQ sauces and stuff, then Ajay dropped us off at Karina's place to pick up some kerosene lamps for the beach. Then we took a cab to Melissa's to drop all our stuff and went back to Sherin's place for the early day the next day!
Saturday: We started an early 7am, picked Nicole up and went to Shane's place. He had no idea what was going on so he was rather taken aback he had to get up so early! He blew out his little cake which was really a Gardenia Vanilla bun with a tealight on top. No cake shop was open so early in the morning! Then we went off to the Sikh temple at Yishun and there we had our ride come pick us up. A London cab! That was another surprise and we had Shane guessing the whole way where we were gonna bring him next. Probably had nooo idea he was going diving with the sharks at Sentosa!
So thats what we did! Faiz met us there too and he, Shane and I got changed and briefed for the dive. It was my first time in a full suit with booties! I like! A whole lot less kental than the shorties with fins. It was hardly a dive really, it was a walk underneath a 3m tank but the sights were awesome! Black tip sharks, White tips and Leopard Sharks. They hardly trash about, buggers were nicely sleeping on their well fed stomachs on the sea bed so you can pet and stroke them and they won't even flinch!
The highlight of the whole trip was the feeding of the eagle rays. When you feed them their cockles, you feel their teeth brush against your palm and you stroke their soft white bellies, truly amazing!! Saw a bit of the dolphin show then had lunch at Far East plaza and checked into the York Hotel. Surprise #3!!
Had a bit of rest then met Luthfie who drove us to Melissa's place and then to East Coast to set up. East Coast was a heck of a lot more crowded than we expected so we didn't get the spot we wanted. But everyone came together and helped set up and it no time we had the pool packed with ice and drinks and the grill sizzling with chicken and franks. Played some games, drank with the birthday boy and headed back to the room. Major knockout session!
Sunday: Helped Melissa prepare for a kid's birthday party at Julia Gabriels. That was pretty fun! It was a pirate theme party! So there were major sea decorations and a ton of helium balloons. And parents so rich they arrive with maids dressed in uniforms. Very cute kids, some very dressed for the part! Eye patch and all! Thank goodness Monday is a holiday! Time for some RnR: Recuperation and Recovery!!
Happy Birthday Shane and Ajay!!!
